History

The original station on this site opened on June 6, 1892.[2] In addition to serving 'L' trains, the Roosevelt station also served trains of the North Shore Line. 'L' trains stopped using the station in 1949 when CTA routed all trains from Englewood and Jackson Park through the State Street Subway, forming the North-South Route (a precursor of today's Red Line) but it continued to serve as the southern terminal for the North Shore Line until 1963, when the railroad ceased operations. The station then closed and was demolished. Tracks still passed the spot, and trains resumed passing in 1969 when these began to route Dan Ryan trains into the Loop "L". The current station opened in 1993 as part of the new CTA Orange Line.
